Visa Requirements

As an American, Canadian or other non-EU citizen, it is necessary to have a permit to reside, and ultimately work in Italy, for any period of time exceeding 3 months. Further information on obtaining the relevant permits can be obtained from the Italian embassy or local passport office. To be eligible for employment at Berlitz please be sure that you have obtained all the appropriate documentation and permits.

Hiring Procedure

ItalyOnce we have received your application, we will contact you regarding an interview. Interviews are held at the language center during regular office hours. If you reside outside of Italy, please inform us as to when you are planning to be in the country so that we can set up a personal interview at the center to which you are applying. Any costs incurred while travelling to the interview are covered by the applicant. After successful completion of the interview process, you will be invited to attend the Berlitz Instructor Training. This will also be held at one of our language centers and is free of charge.

Teaching Contracts

Due to the nature and range of programs offered by Berlitz, we initially offer new instructors freelance contracts. Under such conditions, the working hours are flexible and may change from week to week depending on customer requests and the demand for lessons.

Taxes and Pension Plans

Pension payments are included in the contract. The pension is valid for all of the EU as well as Canada.

Residence Permit

You must, under Italian law, declare and register yourself with the relevant local authority in your host town or city. This is an important point for tax purposes, etc. In addition to the registration of the residence with the local authority, you must obtain a "Permesso di soggiorno per motivi di Lavoro" which is a resident visa for work reasons. The visa is relatively easy to obtain for EU citizens, it's more difficult for non-EU citizens. Unfortunately Berlitz will not be able provide you with the paperwork needed to obtain this document. The last (and easiest) document that you need is the "Codice Fiscale", which is the equivalent to a Social security number. Further information regarding addresses, departments or contact people can be obtained locally from Berlitz Language Centers.

Getting Started

Our experience has shown that you will initially need to bring approximately €2,500 - €3,000, depending on the duration of your stay, to budget for acquiring an apartment or similar accommodation, day-to-day living expenses, and miscellaneous expenses that can be incurred. It is necessary to open a bank-account on arrival, which facilitates the transfer of monthly salaries, payment of bills, etc.
